School leavers looking to kickstart their careers in the construction industry are invited to explore a wide range of trades with Northumberland Skills this weekend.
The Construction and Building Services Training Centre in Seghill is holding an enrolment day to give young people the chance to grab one of the last remaining places.
Learners can find out more about the centre’s multi-skills, plastering and electrical study programmes, meet the lecturers and take a tour of the industry-standard facilities.
Harry Ayre, 17, is studying Level 1 Plastering after completing the multi-skills course last year - and has already lined up an apprenticeship with a local employer.
He said: “When I left school, I had no idea what I wanted to do next. I applied for the multi-skills course as I thought it would let me try different trades.
“It was brilliant and as soon as I had a go at plastering, I knew that was the trade I wanted to go into, so I’ve come back to study it this year.
“I’m going for an apprenticeship trial next week, so I’m really excited about that.
“The campus is a great environment to learn and build on your skills, the classes are quite small and calm and so you get lots of one-to-one support and really good careers advice.
“You learn a lot and also it’s just really fun, I enjoy coming in every day.”
David Metcalfe, Northumberland Skills Curriculum Lead, said: “Construction is a massive sector in the North East and there is high demand from employers.
“We’ve got quite a few learners who have come onto the courses in September and are already going out on work trials for apprenticeships. Seeing them thriving here is fantastic.
“This open day is the chance for people to come along, see the facilities and speak to the team and see if it’s for them.”
Northumberland Skills is Northumberland County Council’s post-16 learning provider and has campuses across the county.
The event takes place on Saturday 28 Sept 2024, 10am – 12pm at Northumberland Skills Construction, Pitt Lane, Front Street, Seghill, Cramlington NE23 7EB.
